what does hair porosity mean

Porosity is a measure of the hair’s ability to absorb and hold moisture. it can be better explained as how easily moisture can penetrate the hair. hair porosity is largely determined by genetics, but can also be altered by external factors much as heat and several  processing.

Is low or high porosity hair good?

  • Low porosity is water-resistant and has a harder time absorbing moisture. if you have low porosity hair you might be experience a lot of undergrowth and that your hair takes longer time to dry.
  • High porosity hair can easily absorb moisture but has trouble when it comes to holding onto it. people with very porosity hair always have flaky and squeaky hair due to constant dryness.

What type of porosity hair do you have?

Here’s a test to know what porosity your hair has, to know how  to treat your hair better and what hair product would suit your hair better.

  1. Shampoo and rinse your hair.
  2. Fill a glass of water.
  3. Once your hair is clean and dry, drop a single strand of hair into the glass of water.
  4. Watch the strand to see if it sinks to the bottom or floats at the top.

  • Low porosity: if the strand floats at the top before sinking, you likely have low porosity hair.
  • Normal porosity: if the strand floats somewhere in the middle of the glass, you probably have medium or normal porosity hair.
  • High porosity: if the strand quickly sinks to the bottom of the glass, you likely have high porosity hair.

If you have low porosity hair, when conditioning or moisturizing you’d need just an adequate amount, but for high porosity hair you’d need in abundance.
