What causes an itchy scalp?

  • Dandruff: is a common condition that causes the skin on the scalp to flake. It isn’t contagious or serious. But it can be really embarrassing and difficult to treat.
  • Reaction to a hair care product: if you experience burning or peeling of the scalp, the issue may be an allergic skin reaction called dermatitis. In some cases harsh ingredients in your styling products can irritate and inflame the scalp, which leads to dryness and itchiness. If you suspect this is the case, discontinue using your styling product until you pinpoint which one is giving you trouble.
  • Allergic reaction: you might just be allergic to some of the ingredients in the hair care product you use. So be sure to always check the ingredients of product you intend to use if at all you tend to react to some products.
  • Weather changes: winter causes our hair and scalp to dry out due to a decrease in relative humidity in the air, which leads to increased water loss from our skin and hair. This dryness can cause more itching and increased scales or flakes formation (dandruff).
  • Eczema
  • Head lice
  • Improper diet
  • Underlying skin condition

*if you have dandruff, using a dandruff shampoo and scalp treatment can help.

*An itchy, dry and flaky scalp could be telling you that you need to do better job of rinsing the shampoo from your hair. Leaving some shampoo on your hair from an irregular hair rinse can cause irritation to the scalp.

Natural home remedies you can try

There are multiple home remedies which may be effective for an itchy scalp that doesn’t require medical treatment.

  • Apple cider vinegar: has anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antibacterial properties, you can use apple cider vinegar diluted with water as a clarifying rinse to get rid of excess product buildup.
  • Organic coconut oil: is one of the best home ingredients for a dry scalp. And it’s really an overall wonder treatment for natural hair. If you have been scratching a lot, coconut oil can also help cut down on the risk of infection.
  • Essential oil: there are a variety of essential oils that can combat an itchy scalp. Tea tree oil is known for its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. Not only does it keep itchiness away it can also help to keep infections away too. However this oil should be used carefully because of its high potency.
  • Load up on moisturizers: extra moisture can reduce an itch. You’ll need a good middle ground shampoo that isn’t too stripping nor too rich. Too much oil on the scalp can have the opposite effect and eventually lead to even more flaking.
